RescueTime – How to Reclaim Your Time

The hardest part of making a living with social media is… Well, the social media.

It is so easy to slip down the rabbit hole and come out hours later having designed your dream house on Pinterest but not done anything remotely related to work.

RescueTime – Because My Time Needs Rescuing

I’ve come to the conclusion that my time needs rescuing…

RescueTime - Because My Time Needs Rescuing

Especially if you’re getting sidetracked by social media…I mean, as bloggers, our job is primarily ON SOCIAL MEDIA! Who can raise their hand and admit that they have a social media problem…?

*slowly raises hand…

It’s ok to admit it! I’ll be honest, at first, I didn’t think that I had a problem but then I started using a little app called RescueTime. Oh, my word!

RescueTime is Shocking!

In fact…you know what just happened? I was writing this blog post and decided to go over to RescueTime’s Facebook page but before I got there I saw something I wanted to listen to really quick and then that lead me to the comments…which lead me to think of someone I forgot to message…which lead me to message them and then I was like, “What was I doing?”

Oh yeah!! Writing you awesome peeps! So I’m back…obviously, I’ve not perfected the art of complete focus but one of my FAVORITE tools that hold me accountable is Rescue Time.

With so many distractions and possibilities in your digital life, it’s SO easy to get scattered and distracted! RescueTime helps you understand your daily habits so you can focus and be more productive.

So… HOW DOES IT WORK?

Basically, it runs in the background on your computer (and your phone too!) and it tracks the time you spend on applications and websites. From the information it tracks, it gives you a picture of how your day was spent…

Which can be an ugly picture…at least, it was for me at first.  But it’s getting better…

I can honestly say that this app has completely revolutionized my work day. While I haven’t used it, you can even block distracting websites by choosing the amount of time you want to “laser-focus.”

The best part is that it lets you define what activity is productive or not productive and you’ll get a productivity pulse for the day. This was a great indicator for me to see how I was doing for the day.

I hope you don’t have the same struggles that I have but if you need some extra help finding your own work-life balance…give RescueTime a try.

The Lite version is completely free and it does A LOT!

Tell us in the comments how you need to rescue your time!
